Akamai was founded in 1998 by Tom Leighton PhD ’81 and Daniel Lewin SM ’98 in response to a challenge from MIT Professor Tim Berners Lee. It now delivers nearly a third of all Internet traffic in the world. Akamai’s cloud computing services—deployed on more than 1,200 networks in more than 600 cities worldwide—weather the collective strains of billions of users and hundreds of attacks a day, yet still reliably deliver several terabytes per second of content to the world. This talk addresses some of the greatest challenges facing Internet content as it continues to evolve.
